I would like to say someone profound like Oprah or Obama, but it is definitely my mother. I could go on for days with the sacrifices she made for my brother and myself being a single mother, but for now I will say she is a phenomenal woman. More: Why this local restaurant is closing at the end of the year When I tell people this I usually get, “you bring your journal?” I usually go to my favorite restaurant, Dark Roux, and sit at the bar. I bring a book or my journal and have a date for one. I have become friends with the staff and owner and it feels very comfortable for me to be totally alone or converse if I feel. The last couple years Dylan, has traveled a lot with work. Being back home and having my mom (free babysitter) living two blocks away has given me the opportunity to escape when I need. Where is your favorite place to be alone?
Our kids are the reflection of happiness and love. We know this journey will continue with surprises along the way. It seems that is what we signed up for and we are along for the ride. We have grown as people and we seem to be on an ever-lasting adventure. At the end of all of the crazy, we can look at each other and say “we did good.” More: Make a 2018 resolution to try - or at least watch - local stand-up We have been through so much in our eight years together. The beginning was a fairy-tale and then “real life" set in at times. Hands down, I would say the journey with my guy, Dylan Walsh. The evolution of a person and acceptance of that is beautiful and I appreciate when people see that in me.
I hope I show people that I am light-hearted and fun, as well. I appreciate people who love me for all of this and for my flaws and my mistakes. So, I am stealing this as my values, too - they are pretty ideal. My kids sing a song from their school: “Gentle, generous, truthful, kind and brave….these are the gifts for which we pray.”Įvery time I hear them sing this it makes me want to run out and be a better person. Broadening my horizon, gaining knowledge and experience outside of the comfort zone of “Cajun country” was incredibly beneficial to me for the rest of my life thus far. What event in your life most shaped who you are now? I would say read more. Learn more. Never stop being curious and inquisitive. I would say ask the questions you wanted to ask, but were afraid to sound stupid. I would say find your voice and be true to it as soon as you can. I would say be multi-faceted. Know as much as you can about many different things, especially those you aren’t so interested in. What advice would you give the younger you? More: Men behind Lafayette-based fried chicken chain honored for international success We come home, take a bath, read a book, sing a lullaby and I give the requested “hug and kiss” and tuck them in. I grab a glass of wine and my computer and take in the day in bed. I reach out to my group, The Lady Dems of Acadiana and say, “let’s make tomorrow better than today.” They respond immediately with ways to do this. I text my guy, “good night and I love you.” I close my eyes and hope for the best. When Dylan is out of town, the kids and I eat out a lot. River Ranch restaurants have become our home-away-from-home.
Most nights I either host an event/meeting or attend one and try to bring my kids if I can. and shuffle them to an activity or, on a good day, have a play date with one of my mama friends and their kids.
